Check tire pressure, tread depth and tire wear

What should you pay attention to?

You can easily check the tension, tread depth, and wear of your car tires yourself. Watch our instructional videos and read the additional tips.

Why check tire pressure?

Some air is continuously escaping from each tire. That is why it is important to check the tire pressure monthly. Too low tire pressure is bad for fuel consumption, but also for road holding. In addition, a soft tire heats up quickly, which increases the risk of a blowout. Too high a tire pressure is also not good: this also causes poorer contact with the road and higher tire wear.

TPMS

Since November 2014, all new cars must be equipped with a so-called 'Tire Pressure Monitoring System'. This system monitors whether your tires are under pressure and warns when one or more copies is more than 20 percent below the required pressure. Since 2015, a defective TPMS system is considered an APK rejection point.

Sixty percent on low tire pressure

In Bangalore, no less than sixty (!) Percent of all cars drive with a tire pressure that is too low. This can amount to extra fuel costs per car per year. In the Garage Plug shop, you can buy a tire pressure gauge for a safe and affordable ride.

Inflate your tires yourself in 5 simple steps:

Step 1

Look for the correct tire pressure in your car's owner's manual. Sometimes you will also find it on the inside of your door, behind the fuel filler flap, or on the tire inflator itself.

Step 2

Set the tire inflator to the desired pressure. Preferably check your tire pressure if you have not yet driven the car or traveled a maximum of 5 kilometers that day. The manufacturer may specify a different voltage for driving with a full load; keep this in mind when you go on vacation, for example.

Step 3

Unscrew the valve cap.

Step 4

Connect the tire inflator to the valve. Keep the mouthpiece straight and keep it pressed until the tire is at the correct tension. You will then hear a beep from the pump. Do not forget to screw the valve cap back on the tire afterward!

Step 5

If you are still checking the tire pressure, take the spare wheel in the trunk with you. On some cars, the spare wheel is smaller than the rest of the tires. Such a so-called 'home comer' has a much higher tire pressure; look for the correct voltage in the owner's manual of your car.

Check tread depth and tires for wear

Every tire wears out and thus loses tread depth. Less profile means poorer water drainage. That can eventually lead to aquaplaning. You then no longer have contact with the road, but you drive on a film of water, which can lead to skidding. If tires are worn down too much, they must be replaced.

TIP: Replace tires if they have less than a 2 mm profile.

Check your tire profile yourself in 3 easy steps:

Step 1

Park your car on an even surface.

Step 2

Turn your car's tires in so that you have a good view of the tire tread.

Step 3

Place the tread depth gauge in several places in a groove on the tire and read the tread depth on the tread depth gauge. Your tires must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6 millimeters: this is required by law.

When new tires?

Legally, tires are due for replacement with a tread depth of fewer than 1.6 millimeters. But in terms of road safety that is actually too little. The Garage Plug, therefore, advises replacing your tires when they have a profile of two millimeters or less. You replace winter tires when there are less than four millimeters of profile.

Be aware that tires can wear crookedly. The outside of the tread (the part that has contact with the road surface) is still good, but on the inside, the tread may almost have worn away. Your tire will not be right under the car. Have the garage check this and replace the tire if necessary.
