How do you change the engine oil yourself?

Engine oil is very important for the heart of your car, the engine. The oil has two essential functions: lubricating the parts and cooling the engine. Furthermore, oil ensures a good removal of wear particles and other residues.

What steps are there when changing the oil?

You need a number of materials and tools to change your engine oil First of all, of course, the right oil, which you can often find in the instruction booklet of your car or you can get help from automotive workshop softwareYou also need an oil pan, oil filter, oil filter wrench and drain plug. To make it easier to change it, it is advisable to let the engine run for a while so that the engine oil warms up slightly. This makes it liquid. Once this has been done, you can follow the following step-by-step plan:

  1. Make sure the car is upright and you can get under it. If necessary, you can jack up the car and place it on axle stands, so that you can easily work underneath.
  2. Place the oil pan under the sump pan.
  3. Loosen the oil plug. NOTE: the engine oil will flow immediately.
  4. When all the oil is out, unscrew the oil filter. Motor oil also comes out of this.
  5. Now all the oil is out. Clean everything thoroughly and fit the new drain plug.
  6. Now you can mount the new oil filter. Tighten it to the correct force using a torque wrench .
  7. Unscrew the oil filler cap and add the engine oil. Make sure you use the right oil. Do not immediately pour in all the oil, but wait a few minutes for the oil to settle.
  8. Measure the oil level with the dipstick. Is the level good? Then you are done with the oil change!

Which engine oil is suitable for your car?

As mentioned above, using the right oil is very important. You may have already seen that different types of oil are offered on the market. These oils differ from each other in terms of viscosity and classification.

Fortunately, you do not have to find out for yourself which oil your engine runs best, because the manufacturer has already done this for you. The instruction booklet of your car describes exactly which oil goes into your engine. Still, we explain a few things about viscosity and classification below for the curious handymen!

Viscosity of the oil

An important property of motor oil is its viscosity. This indicates the 'viscousness' of the oil. The first number indicates the viscosity for a cold oil. The second number represents the hot viscosity. The rule of thumb with these numbers is: the higher the numbers, the thicker the oil .

Classification of the oil

In general, there are two types of engine oil classifications. These are: API and ACEA . API stands for American Petroleum Institute. API is always indicated with an S or C. This indicates the type of fuel. The S stands for petrol engines and the C for diesel engines.

ACEA stands for European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. This classification has four different types, namely: A, B, C and E. The A stands for petrol and LPG engines, the B for diesel engines, the C for both petrol, diesel and LPG engines and the E for commercial vehicle engines such as tractors.

When should you change the engine oil?

Now that you know a thing or two about engine oil and the steps to change oil, it is important to know when to do this. However, there is no unequivocal answer to this. Each car has a different service interval.

For more clarity about the intervals of your vehicle, please refer to the owner's manual. It is very important not to exceed these intervals in any case. If you suspect that your oil needs replacing sooner, this is only good for the car. So always replace your engine oil on time and don't forget to replace the oil filter as well.
